Privacy Policy

KessChess (“we”, “us”) is a free chess website at kesshcess.com. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and the choices you have. We don’t sell your information and we don’t show ads.

What we collect

Playing as a guest: the name you choose, and your games, ratings, puzzle and lesson progress and settings. These are stored in your own browser on your device.
If you create an account: your username, your email address, and a securely scrambled (hashed) version of your password. We never store your actual password.
If you use “Continue with Google”: Google shares your email address, your name and a Google account ID with us. We use them only to create and sign in to your KessChess account. We don’t get your Google password or access to anything else in your Google account.
Account data we keep on our server: your online ratings, game results, profile (bio, avatar, title), the players you follow, and a saved copy of your progress so you can log in on other devices.
Two-step verification: if you turn it on, we store the secret key for your authenticator app and scrambled versions of your backup codes.
Online games: the moves of games you play online, so the server can check them and keep the game going if you reload.

How we use it

To run KessChess: sign-in, online games, ratings, leaderboards and saving your progress.
To keep accounts safe, including limiting repeated wrong passwords.
To keep play fair and names respectful.

What other players can see

Your username, avatar, title, bio, ratings, game statistics and your best game are public to other KessChess players, for example on leaderboards, on your profile and during online games. Your email address is never shown to other players.

Who processes your data

KessChess runs on Cloudflare, which hosts the website and stores account data on our behalf. If you use Google sign-in, Google handles that step under its own privacy policy. We don’t share your information with anyone else, except if the law requires it.

Cookies and local storage

We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies. KessChess uses your browser’s local storage to remember your progress, settings and sign-in on your device.

How long we keep it, and deleting it

We keep account data while your account exists. You can ask us to delete your account and its data at any time by emailing us (below). Guest progress stays in your browser until you clear it.

Children

KessChess is suitable for all ages, but if you are under 13 please ask a parent or guardian before creating an account. If you believe a child has given us personal information without permission, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

All connections to KessChess are encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are hashed, sign-in attempts are limited, and you can add two-step verification. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you don’t use anywhere else.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top of this page.
